How to do it
1. Review new transactions
Look at the merchant, amount and description for each entry.
2. Choose a category
For example, choose Groceries for a supermarket purchase or Interest Income for interest earned.
3. Create a rule for repeats
If the same kind of transaction appears often, make a rule to categorize it next time.
4. Check that the rule is not too narrow
Use a recognizable merchant or description rather than a statement date that changes every month.
5. Check for duplicates and transfers
Before finishing, make sure repeated imports and transfers are not counted as spending.
Good to know: You can correct a category later. Rules are there to save time, not to replace a quick review.
